THE NEWBIE - The three-point hitch is now standard equipment on almost all tractors, but back in 1926, when patented in Great Britain by an Irish engineer named Harry Ferguson, it revolutionized the way implements were attached to tractors. Ferguson had visualized the many advantages to be gained by creating a rigid connection between a tractor and plow, so he experimented with this new linkage technology. Soon, his “Ferguson System” for attaching specially designed implements started its climb from obscurity to the status of an important milestone in tractor history.

LATEST ISSUE - The 1934 McCormick-Deering WD-40 on the September/October 2015 issue of Antique Power magazine is one of three machines McCormick-Deering produced in advance of regular WD-40 manufacture. The owner has thoroughly researched and documented its history, and he believes its “503” serial number makes it the third of those three pre-production units. I enjoyed photographing it for this cover story, as well as visiting with its restorers. The tractor’s owner, Eric Best, wrote the story that accompanies my photos.

TALES FROM THE BACK 40 - Last month, I wrote about how my family and I spent plenty of time out in the field and up in the haymow producing and putting away thousands of small square bales each year. On our farm, they were 18 inches wide, 14 inches high, and 36 inches long and weighed around 40 pounds each. Those are Dad’s measurements; Mom said they’re underestimated. “They were more like seven feet long and weighed about 100 pounds each,” she said. While we kept making those thousands of square bales every summer, we also graduated to other sizes and formats of hay accumulation.
