In a 1960 advertisement heralding the new D-series tractor, Allis-Chalmers defined its product history in terms of decades: “For the ’30s, the practice started with rubber tires. For the ’40s … streamlining … outstanding power for weight … starter and lights standard. For the ’50s … Traction Booster system … two-clutch power control … Power-Shift rear wheels and Power-Crater engine.”
The D series, already in its third full year of production when the ad saw print, expanded the company’s legacy of innovation and modernization. In October 1957, Allis-Chalmers released its first D-series tractors: the D-14 and D-17. While the D-14 was an all-new category for the company, the D-17 replaced the legendary, four-plow-rated WD-45 that Allis-Chalmers debuted in 1953.
An Allis-Chalmers ad in the November 1959 issue of Successful Farming covered the addition of the D-10 and D-12 for 1960 to complete the D line.
“Now … 4 dynamic D’s … 1960 new!”
The ad promoted the “All-new line of D-series tractors,” describing the D-10, D-12, D-14, and D-17 developed by “Allis-Chalmers research and engineering” as a “dynamic new tractor family.” The D-10, designed for one-row cultivation, replaced the Model B, introduced in 1937 while the D-12, built for two-row cultivation, replaced the Model CA, introduced in 1950. The company continued the unique Model G that debuted in 1948.
The advertisement also made much of the start of a new decade. “One … two … three …FOUR new tractors to start the new decade of power farming. That’s the news for 1960 from Allis-Chalmers. Which one is yours—to do the jobs on your farm or ranch?”
