“Farmers aren’t protesters. They aren’t picketers, either. But they do speak their minds when the need arises.”
Those three short sentences begin The Georgia Farmers’ Strike: The American Agricultural Movement vs. Jimmy Carter, a book by Lee Lancaster that gives the full story of the late-1970s farming protests that eventually sent thousands of tractors to Washington, D.C. Lancaster’s is the only published account of the movement in Georgia (the starting and current location of our featured tractor), its participants, and how farmers drove machinery meant for the fields to the nation’s capital to gain exposure for their plight.
Farmer strikes to draw attention to economic problems in the system are nothing new, with such protests occurring in the Midwest as far back as the Depression-era 1930s. French farmers have been regularly using tractor blockades since the 1960s to make the public aware of needs for economic reform.
Our featured Allis-Chalmers 200—a popular row crop machine in its day—played a role in the unprecedented series of protests that pitted farmers nationwide against the government generally and U.S. President Jimmy Carter specifically.
Birth of the American Agriculture Movement
Over several decades, decisions by presidents, lawmakers, secretaries of agriculture, and Federal Reserve Board chairs of both major political parties—not to mention a series of fuel shortages and runaway inflation—led to the financial crises that were crippling America’s farm families in the late 1970s.
