The Massey-Harris “Triple Four”

A beautiful 1956 Massey-Harris Model 444 is one of Michigan collector Tom Reed’s favorite tractors.

Touring the countryside with an antique tractor is a favorite pastime for Tom Reed, and his 150-mile-long journeys require dependable tractors. A thorough rebuild is all but a non-negotiable requirement, and his 1956 Massey-Harris
(M-H) Model 444 easily goes above and beyond.

He lives on the 400-acre farm in Horton, Michigan, that has been in the family for five generations, and farming the land is nostalgic for him. Settled by his family in the 1860s, the farm has a rich history with M-H equipment.

Reed and his brother John, both retired teachers, collect tractors and own about a dozen. The brothers have rented out most of their land but still enjoy working with the tractors they remember seeing when they were kids. They started collecting tractors with an M-H Challenger, a tractor that their father had owned, and that good tractor started Tom Reed’s lifelong admiration of Massey-Harris.

Reed was 16 when M-H released the 444, and he remembers how he thought it would be nice to own one. Although he was unable to buy a new tractor back then, Reed knew he would own one someday.
